The deer musk is a fabled character that has been important to me since I first heard about it. The fable goes something like this (This is my own version, which does not have the grisly ending that sometimes gets passed around, but it has the same overall meaning):
Once upon a time, a musk deer lived in a forest. This musk deer became mystified by this wonderful scent that was always around, and made her happy. She wanted to find the source of this smell. So she spent every day looking for it, but was not able to find where it was coming from. As a result, she grew frustrated and unhappy. So went the days, a never-ending search for this scent, always ending in disappointment. What the deer did not realize was that the musk scent, in fact, was coming from it's own forehead (i.e. third eye). It was a part of her, but she didn't know or think to look within for this source of happiness. The musk deer was looking for happiness elsewhere, when all along, it could be found within her.
